Boston post office begins to handle domestic as well as foreign mail.

Upon the death of Richard Fairbanks, John Hayward is appointed postmaster for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The post office is located at this time at the Merchants Exchange in the Town House. Ship masters are directed to send all letters in their care to Hayward in 1680.
